Ever wished you could wave a magic wand and voila, baby is sleeping soundly?   What mother hasn’t?

We don’t have a magic wand but we do have some tips to Better Baby Sleep thanks to our guest blogger Alison Gregory from Newborn Solutions. Read on for Alison’s 5 Steps to Better Baby Sleep and you’ll be surprised, they don’t involve the SHHH, Swing, Snuggle technique but I’m sure they will help your little one sleep more soundly.

Read on to find our more…

Sensory

Babies and toddlers are tactile little beings. They love the softness of a gentle touch but more than that they have a heightened sense of touch, due to the fine covering of hair, baby sleeping, newborn sleeping stepsover their entire body. Sometimes we underestimate the value of nude time. If you watch a semi-nude baby wiggle and squirm on a soft rug, you can see them sensory processing, as they enjoy the gentle massage they get, every time they move. As a baby gets tired and begins to fall asleep, they turn their head from side to side. Having something soft and breathable for your baby to sleep on, can assist them to self-settle, as they feel the gentle massage they create with this motion. From 6-12 months and beyond, this same rug can become your little one’s comforter and sleep association tool.

Smell

Your baby is comforted by familiar smells. They actually enjoy the smell of themselves as well those who are a regular part of their life. We can use this knowledge to our advantage, as we use a wrap or sleeping bag for repetitive sleeps to create consistency and assurance. Unfortunately this can mean they associate certain smells with certain tasks e.gbreastfeeding mother with a milk smell. This can make settling for those mums at times, difficult without feeding, due to them smelling like a 5-star restaurant. This is where Dads can often settle the baby quicker than mum overnight. Or if that isn’t feasible, ladies put on your partner’s dirty shirt to mask the oestrogen smell and replace it with testosterone.

Settling Techniques

Newborn sleeping techniques

1. Keep it simple – don’t start with your best settling tools, but instead work up to them as needed.
2. Sleep aids like dummies, white noise, motion to sleep, holding to sleep etc. can be the common cause of sleep regression.
3. By putting them to bed awake (but tired) sometimes allows them to learn self-settling.
4. Be Calm, Confident and Consistent with your settling technique.

Sensitivity

They are sensitive little people. They can escalate in cry at the smallest of problems. We just need to be careful not to inhibit them from trying to solve their own problem from time to time.

Example: when you see them in their crib whinging, pulling their legs up, they are trying to pass gas or a bowel motion. Avoid picking them up straight away or trying to solve the issue. Observe from a distance first and then try and settle them without picking them up (e.g tummy pressure and massage).

Structure & routine

Babies/toddlers thrive on structure because they like to know what’s coming next. It creates patterns in your little one’s body clock.Sleeping Baby Techniques, how to help your baby sleep better
There are generic routines in a number of different books, but I recommend you observe your child more than you take advice from a wall clock. Learn your little one’s body language, by that I mean their genuine request for food, their tired signs, whether they have a wet or dirty nappy, lonely or bored signals, and they need your attention.

Here’s what one Mum said about Alison’s sleeping solutions

The information and advice Alison from Newborn Solutions provided was magic. My Miss M slept through on night 3! We were rocking, bouncing, shhing, and feeding to sleep up to 6 times per night. Her day naps were also inconsistent lasting 20-40 minutes, but now she has 3 great day sleeps one of those being 2-3 hours long. I find myself with so much extra time and refreshed with her consistently sleeping through the night. I highly recommend Alison. Cathy (Brisbane)

Organic products for Mother and Baby, blog by Bloom and Clementine

On this lazy Saturday morning, playing with my daughter, I was distracted by a ‘beep’ – I couldn’t help but check my phone (as a business owner I am a slave to ‘beeps’).

To my absolute delight it was a message from Bloom and Clementine all the way over in Canada!  She had just posted a Blog titled ‘Unboxing Organic Goodies from Lyn’s Label Organic Baby’. You can imagine the sheer excitement this brought to our morning – this gorgeous lady is our Blogging Idol.  Featuring the most beautiful, organic products that are gentle on our bodies and our environment I was honoured to have Lyn’s Label as a brand that she ‘loves’.

So off I went, made myself a cup of tea (organic of course), started my computer and began reading…  I was both overjoyed and humbled with each word, every stunning photo…

Each of Kari’s Blogs contain unique, organic, eco products and her photography is to die for.

FLASHBACK

Pregnancy Baby and Childrens Expo

It was a chilly Melbourne morning 25yrs ago that Lyn Newlove set up her first stand at the Pregnancy Baby & Children’s Expo and this year she will be returning as an exhibitor in Brisbane with her daughter Marnie.

Together they recently relaunched Lyn’s Label (organic baby accessories brand) back into the market and are now looking forward to exhibiting together at the Pregnancy Baby & Children’s Expo held in Brisbane from June 17th to 19th.

“Running a business today is so different than it was 30 years ago; so much of our interaction these days is online.  We are really looking forward to going back to basics with the Expo and being able to chat face-to-face with our guests.  Our designs are quite different and the fabrics we use are so tactile it is only at an event such as the Pregnancy Baby & Children’s Expo that guests really have an opportunity to see, touch and try each of our products before they buy.”

Daughter of Lyn and now Director of Lyn’s Label Marnie said she is honoured to be sharing this event with her mother so many years after the company’s debut.  “It has been an amazing journey for us since resurrecting Lyn’s Label and to be able to attend the Pregnancy Baby & Children’s Expo so many years after my mothers’ first exhibition, is going to be incredible.  Not only will we be showcasing our range but this time we have an amazing story behind our brand which I am proud to share.  The Pregnancy Baby & Children’s Expo is a much loved and highly anticipated annual event and we’re thrilled to be taking part, this time as a Mother and Daughter Team.”

To have or not to have… a dummy that is

To have or not to have… a dummy that is

children and dummiesTo have or not to have… a dummy, is a question most parents face, particularly first-time parents.  I remember throwing around this very question when my little girl was born.  The more people I spoke to the more uncertain I became.  Our resident blogger, Jacqueline de Robillard has highlighted some very good questions and guidelines when toying with the question “to have or not to have… a dummy”.

Just about every decision made on behalf of a newborn baby has the potential for intergalactic warfare. Well inter-family-warfare, at the very least. If you already have children you will know instantly what I am talking about. If you are still to have your first baby then reading this may save you a lot of trouble.

Let’s take one tiny thing, measure it against its potential for trouble and look at how collateral damage can be avoided.

That innocuous little thing, of course, is the dummy. Should your baby have one?

Picture the discussion

  • Janet:    I had a dummy. My Mother says they pacify, that babies need to suck and they do no harm at all. I am certainly fine.
  • Jason:    My Mother says they cause infection, tooth decay and dependency. They should be banned. I never had one and I am certainly fine.

Choosing whose Mother was right is an arena no-one wants to enter. To make your own decision and feel comfortable and confident is not as hard as you might think either.

Make your decision an informed one

As I was thinking about this topic I asked a few Mothers whether their babies had had dummies. The response that I thought best expressed my message, came from Julia who has three children. Of those only the middle child had been given a dummy. With the first she was determined that she would not resort to a dummy. By the second she thought they should be compulsory and the third “didn’t need one”.

Do babies benefit from extra sucking?

Some do. All babies need sucking but the amount varies. In babies sucking is a reflex so putting a dummy in their mouths and noting that they suck on it is not an indication that they actually need extra sucking. This can be something to bear in mind when considering milk flow either from a breast or a bottle. Slower may be better.

Does it actually calm them?

Very often, yes. Obviously not if the problem is hunger or pain. However if the intention is to sooth mild discomfort following a feed, or to buy a few minutes before a feed, or if the baby is sleepy but seems to be resisting actually going to sleep, a dummy can work wonders.

Do babies become dependent on dummies?

Actually this can happen and can be a very real problem. With continued use, it is not uncommon for the child to become so used to having a dummy in their mouth that they will wake when it falls out during sleep.

Are there health risks associated with the use of dummies?

The short answer to this is yes. The longer answer is not necessarily.   All of the health risks shown to be associated with dummy use are associated with prolonged and/or frequent use or the addition of sweetness to the dummy.

In Summary

A rule of thumb would be to use when necessary not as a matter of habit. It is less important whether your baby uses a dummy than how it is used.

Discretionary use of a dummy can be a great help to parents and a comfort to babies.

Not all babies need one. Does yours?

Is your Bamboo organic?

Is your Bamboo organic?

Organic Bamboo Processing Methods

Is your Bamboo organic?

This is a question we are often asked and we are proud to say that we can not get any more organic then we are currently.

Thanks to the internet, we are privy to a lot more information than we used to be. With the stroke of just a few keys, we can research almost any topic and receive a myriad of information. Deciphering this information can often be tricky as there are no real guidelines as to what can and cannot be posted online. There is a lot of misleading and even incorrect information on the internet, particularly about Bamboo.

Which brings me back to the original question – Is your Bamboo Organic?  Our answer to this is categorically – “Yes”  We can say this because we have a number of world recognized certifications acknowledging our Organic fabrics that are free of harmful chemicals.

Before I detail our certification’s, firstly I’d like to say, the health and care of our customers, mothers and their babies, is our number one priority and in saying that, so too is sustainability and transparency.  At Lyn’s Label, we are proud of the fact that our processing and manufacturing partners have all the necessary up to date, world-recognized certifications ensuring the fabrics we use are what we say they are.

Why can we say we are Organic?

The Lyn’s Label Bamboo range can not get any more organic then it currently is. Our fabric facility and any of their sub-contractors are regularly inspected and assessed and they all comply with the Organic Content Standard (OCS).  Further to this certification, the yarns that we are using in our bamboo fabrics have been inspected and passed certified Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and our facility partners also have the relevant certifications to support this.

We are very proud of these certifications and feel OCS and GOTS provide the highest world recognized level of Organic certification.

Further to this, the fabrics produced by our facility partner have also passed all testing in accordance to the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) and they have the certification for OEKO testing for harmful chemicals. The results of the testing are made in accordance to Oeko-Tex Standard 100, product CLASS 1 for baby articles and have shown that the goods from our facility partners meet all human-ecological requirements that are presently established.  Our partners also have a current OEKO-TEX for 2016.

What does all this mean?

The facility we use exclusively for our bamboo fabric manufacturing is following all the organic and safety standards that are currently in place from four key Internationally recognized bodies. They must be regularly updated and we voluntarily conduct monthly research to see if anything else exists that is better or cleaner.  Having these updated certifications provide credibility to our products and assurance to our customers.   We can confidently say that we are providing the cleanest, safest, most eco-friendly and sustainable products to our customers.

Have you asked the question… Is your Bamboo Organic?

Keep an eye out for our next post around the sustainability of Bamboo and why it is different to Cotton…

All your parenting needs will be in one place at The Essential Baby and Toddler Show held in March.  We’re super excited to announce that this will be their first time in the sunshine state and they definitely have loads of special activities planned for everyone.

Not only will it be their first time in Brisbane for The Essential Baby and Toddler Show but it will our debut also. As most products in the Lyn’s Label range are hand-made (right here in Brisbane) we have been working day and night to get our beautiful collection ready.  With visitor numbers expected to be more than 10,000, that’s a lot of people and a lot of sewing!

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing the gorgeous Nicole Thomas from The The Essential Baby and Toddler Show Team and by the sounds of it, visitors are in for a treat!

If you are planning on popping into the show be sure to road test the complimentary Lyn’s Label Maya Portable Change Mattresses in the Baby Change Rooms!  You will find us nearby at stand F23.

Have a fabulous day & we hope to see you at the SHOW!

How long has it been running & in what cities?

2016 marks our eighth year in Australia. We have annual shows in Melbourne and Sydney (and now, Brisbane!)

What made you decide to host in QLD?

Visitors and Exhibitors often ask us if we’re going to be coming to Brisbane, and the question for us has always been ‘when’, and not ‘if’.  Just like planning a family, timing is everything.

We’ve worked hard over the past 8 years to create a beautiful and stylish environment for new and expectant parents in Sydney and Melbourne to come and gain advice, be entertained and of course shop for all the necessities needed for this amazing parenting journey.  Over the past few years our event has grown and matured into what we believe to be the best parenting event around, and we’re excited to now finally be able to share it with thousands of new Queensland families.’

What makes The Essential Baby and Toddler Show different from other major baby and parenting shows?

We’re not just a baby expo. Yes, we have fantastic local and international brands supporting us at the Show and engaging with our visitors, and that is a large part of our event. Along with this, we’re also able to provide our visitors with access to Australia’s leading parenting organisations, giving them the chance to meet them one-on-one and ask any questions or talk through any concerns in person. We also provide amazing entertainment and play areas. Peppa Pig is coming to Brisbane with us as well as Shelley Craft’s children’s band Animals Rock!

Who should come to The Essential Baby and Toddler Show & what exciting activities will be on offer?

Expectant and new parents seeking information and advice about the world of parenting, grandparents, parents with babies and toddlers, friends looking for that perfect baby shower gift, and more!

What is your role in The Essential Baby and Toddler Show & what is the most exciting thing about your role?

I am a Sales Executive here at the Essential Baby & Toddler show, my role is based out of Sydney and I am responsible for finding amazing brands and businesses to attend the shows across our Brisbane, Melbourne & Sydney shows. Account Management is one of the key parts of my role as I have over 100 exhibitors and counting that I personally look after across all three shows. I have been with the team since July 2015 and there are so many things I love about my role but mainly I love the fact that I get to talk to and meet so many inspiring businesses very much like Lyn’s Label. I also love being onsite and watching it all come together – seeing my exhibitors do well is the most rewarding part of my job.

We are constantly looking for new businesses to join our shows should you know of anyone please send them my way Nicole.thomas@fairfaxmedia.com.au or 02 9282 1305.
